About LightKeeper

Every aid to navigation, one tap away.

LightKeeper is a planning tool for US Coast Guard Aids-to-Navigation work: every aid in the USCG Light List on a map, with the boat ramps, lodging, tides, river gages, dams and weather you need around them. Built by Evan Isakson.

Two editions

Use it in the browser, or install it.

Web edition

Runs entirely in your browser from this site: nothing is sent to a LightKeeper server, because there is none. The Light List is rebuilt here every week; places, tides, gages and forecasts are fetched straight from the public services below and cached in your browser, so the app keeps working offline for areas you have already looked at. Works on phones.

Desktop app (Windows)

Everything the web edition does, plus the trip planner (days split along the waterway, launch and recovery ramps chained, lodging picked last, PDF work plans), USACE dam pool and release data, NOAA chart and satellite tiles downloaded for whole districts, backups and optional routing keys. All data is cached under AppData so it runs with no connection at all.

Data sources

Where every number comes from.

LightKeeper does not host or alter any of this data; it shows what each service publishes and names the source on every detail card.

USCG NAVCENLight List (all nine districts) from the Navigation Center's weekly GeoJSON files. Public domain. The web edition's copy is rebuilt every week by an automated job; the build time is shown in Settings.
OpenStreetMapBoat ramps, marinas, lodging, parks and dams via the Overpass API and Nominatim geocoding. © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. Hostels are never shown.
NOAA CO-OPSTide and current station lists, tide predictions (MLLW), current predictions and water temperature from the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
NOAA ENCThe Charts overlay draws NOAA electronic navigational charts from the NOAA Maritime Chart Service. NOAA retired its raster charts (RNC) in 2025, and NGA Digital Nautical Charts (DNC) are not publicly available, so ENC is the only chart layer. Not for navigation.
USGS NWISRiver gage height, discharge and water temperature (instantaneous values service).
National Weather ServiceForecasts, active alerts and the latest observations from api.weather.gov.
Open-MeteoBackup forecast and marine (sea level, sea surface temperature) data when NOAA or the NWS cannot answer. Open-Meteo, CC BY 4.0.
Map tilesStreet map © OpenStreetMap contributors; satellite imagery: Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics (Esri World Imagery); topographic map © OpenTopoMap, CC-BY-SA. Tiles you view are cached in your browser only.
USACE CWMSDam pool elevation, tailwater and releases. Available in the desktop app only; the service cannot be reached from a web page.
